 Subject: Torture in Tibet

There has been an increasing number of reports in recent months about Tibetans dying in custody or shortly after their release, apparently as a result of torture or maltreatment sustained while in detention.

In 2020, the victims of maltreatment or torture in prison or custody included the Tibetan monk Choekyi(1) and Lhamo(2), a mother of three.

In 2021, 19-year-old monk Tenzin Nyima died after being beaten in custody(3) and a Tibetan tour guide, Kunchok Jinpa, died in a hospital in Lhasa, also apparently from injuries inflicted on him while in prison(4).

1. Does the EU intend to publicly condemn the use of torture in Tibet?

2. In addition to regularly expressing concerns about the issue during EU-China Human Rights Dialogues, what concrete measures has the EU taken to press China to put an end to the use of torture in Tibet?
