Jamal Khashoggi, a former close ally of those in power in Saudi Arabia, of which he had become a fierce critic, was assassinated on 2 October 2018 by a commando of agents from Saudi Arabia. His dismembered body has never been found.

The non-governmental organisation Gulf Centre for Human Rights filed a complaint for torture against Saudi General Ahmad al-Asiri for his alleged responsibility for the physical and psychological abuse inflicted on journalist Jamal Khashoggi before his assassination in 2018.

In early March, Reporters Without Borders lodged a crimes against humanity complaint against the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman in Germany for his responsibility for this assassination.
