Question for written answer  E-002971/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Bert-Jan Ruissen (ECR), Annie Schreijer-Pierik (PPE)
 Answer in writing
 Subject: Salmonella in poultry meat

Pluimveeweb.nl(1) reported on 31 May 2021 that, in many instances, chicken meat products from Poland are infected with Salmonella enteritidis or Salmonella typhimurium. The website cites research establishing that Poland accounted for 60% of Salmonella infections in the EU in 2019. The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed also registered many reports of Salmonella in poultry meat from Poland in May 2021. The article cites concerns about inspections and enforcement there.

1. Does the Commission agree that the number of reports of Salmonella infection in products from Poland is above average as a proportion of its production volume and exports and by comparison with other Member States? If so, what action is the Commission's Food and Veterinary Office taking as regards Poland’s national control and enforcement services in order to help reduce the number of infections?

2. To what extent do the rules, and how they are applied, on the prevention and control of Salmonella infections in chicken meat products differ in the Member States? Does the Commission agree that, to ensure a level playing field for businesses, it is important that rules, and how they are applied, should be harmonised?

3. Does the Commission agree that a considerable reduction in Salmonella infections in all Member States is of the utmost importance for EU public health and exports?
