Libya summit
9.6.2021
Question for written answer E-003052/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Athanasios Konstantinou (NI)
Referring to the Libya summit, German Foreign Office Spokesperson Maria Adebahr observed that any conference depended on a solid core of participants able to guarantee a successful outcome while being as inclusive as possible.
Given the extremely serious decision once again taken by the German Government not to invite Greece to the second Libya summit, thereby undermining any notion of effective cooperation between EU partners, this can only be seen as a deliberate snub to Greece, with Ms Adebahr appearing to imply that the latter would not help to ‘guarantee a successful outcome’.
In view of this:
- 1.Does the Commission fully appreciate the fact that the interests of Greece, an EU Member State, are the same as the interests of the Union vis-à-vis a third country such as Turkey that is constantly bringing inadmissible and coercive pressure to bear, flouting EU principles, disregarding international law and threatening war if Greece were, in accordance therewith, to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles (treating this as a casus belli)?
- 2.Will it express its displeasure to Germany at its indifferent and disparaging attitude to a fellow Member State, given that it flies in the face of the spirit of EU cross-border cooperation that ought to prevail?
