5G and the precautionary principle
23.6.2021
Question for written answer E-003289/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Eva Kaili (S&D)
The scientific community seems to be concerned about the lack of data on the negative impacts on health of exposure to the electromagnetic fields (EMF) used in 5G, as well as the lack of impact assessment studies by independent bodies, even for 4G. Nobody can avoid exposure to constant EMF radiation given that an estimated 10 to 20 billion devices connect to the internet using 5G. Members of the public should be informed and have a choice of safe zones, since it also appears that the economic benefits of its deployment would mainly be reaped by the private sector. Furthermore, the argument that 5G would help to achieve fully autonomous mobility is not convincing.
- 1.Did the Commission launch a study on the health impacts of 5G before investing in the technology given that the World Health Organization and other organisations have said that scientific evidence is necessary and have called for respect for the precautionary principle?
- 2.Is it possible to model the full deployment of 5G in special zones where research centres could take full advantage of the network, to monitor its impact for example in terms of proximity and density of use?
- 3.When will the Commission call for the exposure limits for 4G and 5G to be revised within a certain time frame for testing and measuring the safe deployment of this technology?
