Anti-terror law in Austria
20.7.2021
Question for written answer E-003663/2021/rev.1
to the Commission
Rule 138
Silvia Sardone (ID)
With its recent anti-terror law adopted in parliament on 8 July, Austria has become the first European country to have banned the Muslim Brotherhood, one of the leading international political Islam associations, which has roots in other European nations, too.
This law will give the authorities greater powers in the field of surveillance and control of extremist environments. The Brotherhood’s slogans and literature have been banned and the possession or dissemination of propaganda is now punishable by a fine of EUR 4000 and one month in prison.
In Austria there is a lively debate in view of the progressive Islamisation of the country and the recent ban on wearing the Islamic headscarf for pupils in all schools. Political Islam has spread widely, and the country now has 600 mosques and Islamic associations.
In view of this:
- 1.Does the Commission agree with the action taken by the Austrian Government?
- 2.What relations does it have, if any, with the Muslim Brotherhood?
