As from Monday 26 July, a major spell of bad weather has struck the area of Como (Lombardy). Walls have collapsed, homes been invaded by mud and streams have overflown. Many people have been evacuated.
Several roads have been cut off by landslides and vehicles have been hit by landslides, logs and debris.
The weather situation has forced the Italian authorities to close the COVID vaccine hub in Erba, the largest in the province of Como. It is clear from initial reports that some parts of the province have been totally cut off from many other towns and villages as well as from neighbouring Switzerland. The situation is particularly difficult for cross-border workers. Material damage in private and public buildings appears to be substantial and not yet quantifiable.
Will the Commission activate the European Solidarity Fund mechanism to provide practical assistance to the areas affected by the above-mentioned bad weather?
