Question for written answer E-004598/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Ivan Štefanec (PPE)
In partnership with Moldovan railways and the National Association of Tourism Industry Patrons, the Moldovan Institute for the Development and Expertise of Projects (IDEP) launched a working group for regular train travel on the Iasi-Chisinau route[1]. Following extensive consultations held in Iasi on 27 September and Odessa on 28 October[2], on 1 November it was decided[3] to launch regular rail travel synchronised with the existing Chisinau-Odessa route, thereby enabling the tourism industry to organise city breaks by train between Odessa, Chisinau and Iasi.
- 1.Given tourists’ reluctance to travel owing to COVID-19 restrictions and the potential value that such a regional tourism model could bring to jobs and businesses, could the Commission support the IDEP as a platform for boosting regional tourism between these two Eastern Partnership countries (Ukraine and Moldova) and the EU (Romania)?
- 2.Could the Commission envisage carrying out an impact assessment on modernising the infrastructure on this route, which would boost tourism and connected areas in all three countries?
- 3.Could the Commission support the IDEP and Moldovan railways to help them organise a communication campaign for a regular rail connection between Odessa, Chisinau and Iasi and thus promote its sustainability?
