Identifying the role of women in fishing

Question for written answer E-005294/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Predrag Fred Matić (S&D)
Fishing is a profession dominated by men. These men predominantly work on fishing boats, while women typically hold less visible roles in fish capturing, trading, processing, management and administration, which ensure the resilience of fishing families, businesses and communities. Women represent 31 % of the total workforce in aquaculture and 70 % of the fish processing industry.
Yet the female contribution is often portrayed as ‘help’ rather than ‘work’. Women – in particular those who fish – struggle to be included in groups of fishermen, and have to engage in the politics of belonging to be accepted.
- 1.Parliament adopted a resolution entitled ‘Fishers for the future’[1] on 16 September 2021. The resolution highlights the fact that women still lack sufficient economic and social recognition for their role in fisheries. How does the Commission intend to implement the gender equality strategy in the fishing sector and provide women with visible roles in decision-making activities?
- 2.Which budget line from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund[2] for 2021‑2027 – the fund supporting the common fisheries policy – will be aimed at supporting female entrepreneurship in the ‘blue economy’?
