Influence of the Open Society Foundation and George Soros on European politics

Question for written answer E-000142/2022
to the Commission
Rule 138
Tom Vandendriessche (ID)
George Soros is a Hungarian-American investor who has made his fortune from stock market speculation. He is now using this money to pursue his own political and philosophical agenda the world over. Soros uses his Open Society Foundation to finance NGOs and other organisations that propagate his political ideals. He has also provided financial support for demonstrations, some of which have been violent.
Furthermore, Soros is increasingly entering the public debate. For example, he called on the European Union to ‘stand up to’ Poland and Hungary. Last year, too, it was revealed that 22 of the 100 permanent judges of the ECJ had ties with organisations linked to Soros.
In view of this:
- 1.Is there any contact between the Commission and organisations in which Soros is involved (either directly or indirectly), if so, what is being discussed and can such communications be made public in the interests of transparency?
- 2.Are there links between Soros organisations and members of the Commission, as was the case with the ECJ?
- 3.Has the Commission ever had recourse to organisations which are directly or indirectly supported by George Soros and is the Commission concerned about the increasing influence of George Soros on European politics?
