The governments of Italy and France have recently signed a mutual pledge to foster the resilience, sustainability and transition of their agricultural and agri-food systems, while safeguarding the food sovereignty of the European Union. They will thus promote projects for the sustainable development of agri-food supply chains and organic farming, with the aim of contributing to the preservation of soil fertility and biodiversity. The Parties also committed to supporting, protecting and promoting registered designations of origin and geographical indications at Union level and in third countries.
In light of the above:
- 1.With a view to cooperation between EU Member States, does the Commission agree with the commitments made, especially that on European food sovereignty, which implies greater independence from external inputs and effective control of production standards for goods imported into the EU?
- 2.Does the Commission recognise the strategic importance of the agreement on the protection of quality products, entered into by the two countries which account for the greatest number of geographical indications recognised at EU level, and on the need for further promotion of the value of these products, also in light of the possible forthcoming reform of the geographical indications system?
