Network blocking via DNS4EU
30.3.2022
Question for written answer E-001306/2022
to the Commission
Rule 138
Moritz Körner (Renew)
The Commission has launched a call for tender for a European DNS Resolver (DNS4EU).
According to the call for tender, DNS4EU should, on the basis of Union legislation or Member State case law, filter out URLs leading to illegal content. This would mean network blocking at national or EU level.
- 1.What Union legislation provides for Union-wide network blocking?
- 2.Why is the Commission issuing a call for tender for a project that would be able to enforce EU-wide network blocking?
- 3.What is the Commission’s position regarding the assertion that, precisely because of the existence of network blocking, many users are already being driven to providers outside the Union, such as Google, Cloudflare or Quad9, since their DNS resolvers do not engage in such blocking?
