A new Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) – for batteries – was introduced last year. The need for increased strategic autonomy and a role in achieving the Union’s enhanced climate objectives were cited as grounds for the project. Similar efforts should now be made to increase access to fossil-free, fast and safe energy production. Nuclear power, in particular from small modular reactors, is a stable and low-carbon energy source. Does the Commission therefore have any plans to establish an IPCEI for small modular reactors?
