Disposal of asbestos waste in the area of Kosica in Vranjic (town of Solin)

Question for written answer  E-001576/2022
to the Commission
Rule 138
Romana Jerković (S&D)

People’s health is directly linked to the state of the environment in which they live. Article 37 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union enshrines the principle of environmental protection in Union legislation, and Article 13 of Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 November 2008 on waste requires Member States to protect human health and the environment.

Although a ban on the production, trade and use of asbestos and asbestos-containing materials in the Republic of Croatia entered into force on 1 January 2006, large amounts of unmanaged carcinogenic asbestos waste can still be found in the wider area of the former Salonit factory in Vranjic, in the area of Kosica. A municipal beach is located on Kosica, where concessions are being granted for catering activities, excavations are being carried out and concrete posts installed.

What is the Commission doing to make the Republic of Croatia clean up the carcinogenic asbestos waste in the area of Kosica, Vranjic, which is endangering the health of people in Solin?
