Sustainable food systems and packaging

Question for written answer E-001915/2022
to the Commission
Rule 138
Elsi Katainen (Renew)
There is pressure on food systems from many directions all around the world, from the pandemic to the war in Ukraine, which has resulted in an immediate humanitarian crisis and a threat to the future of global food security. This has a direct impact on the entire food production chain, and also affects packaging.
Soaring energy prices and the problems with the availability of raw materials also add to the challenges associated with the manufacture of packaging products. This poses a risk to essential systems, such as the production and supply of food and medicines. It is important that, in the food contingency plans, which are intended to try to resolve the crisis, careful consideration is given to how current and future legislation can be improved, especially if these laws have a direct impact on the EU’s ability to safeguard its food systems. One such piece of legislation is the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD).
- 1.Can the European Commission say whether the possible impact of legislative proposals affecting European food systems, in particular the legislative framework for sustainable food systems (FSFS), has been analysed in comparison with other initiatives that would also help strengthen the resilience of European food systems, and how an increase in the use of sustainable packaging is being ensured?
- 2.Could the Commission say in particular whether, in the drafting of the legislative framework for sustainable food systems, consideration has been given to the possibility of reforming the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD)?
