Parliamentary question - E-002130/2022(ASW)Parliamentary question

Answer given by High Representative/Vice-President Borrell i Fontelles on behalf of the European Commission

Following the decision taken by Algeria to suspend the Treaty of friendship and good neighbourly relations signed with Spain, the EU has immediately been in contact with both the Spanish Government and Algerian interlocutors.

The EU takes note of the latest instruction from the Algerian banking association ABEF (Association professionnelle des banques et des établissements financiers) of 28 July 2022, whereby the freeze of banking transactions, related to trade of goods and services from and to Spain, which ABEF had enacted on 8 June 2022, has been lifted.

Algeria is an important partner for the EU in the Mediterranean and a key actor for regional stability. The EU therefore favours dialogue to solve controversies.

We now look forward to full implementation of these instructions and to a complete resumption of trade and investment relations between the EU and Algeria in line with the Association Agreement .

The EU has also engaged in regular exchanges with the Algerian government on gas exports to Europe, including Spain. The Algerian authorities have consistently confirmed that energy supplies to Spain will be unaffected by the suspension of the Treaty.

They will remain guaranteed through the Medgaz gas pipeline and, if needed, through liquefied natural gas shipments. The EU will continue to closely monitor the situation and engage constructively with Algerian authorities on energy issues.
