Italian Government’s disbursement of funds for the clean-up of the former ILVA plant

Question for written answer E-002216/2022
to the Commission
Rule 138
Gianna Gancia (ID), Marco Campomenosi (ID)
The rejection by the Italian Chamber of Deputies’ Budget and Constitutional Affairs committees of amendment 21 to the Italian Government’s ‘Milleproroghe’ Decree has blocked the disbursement of EUR 575 million to the company tasked with overseeing the clean-up of the former ILVA steel plant in Taranto.
This obstruction puts the timeline for the clean-up and decarbonisation of the steel production cycle in serious jeopardy, not to mention the finances of an industry that employs thousands of workers in southern and north-western Italy, in particular Piedmont and Liguria.
What is more, it goes against multiple calls from the Commission and condemnation from international institutions such as the European Court of Human Rights concerning respect for citizens’ right to health .
In the light of this:
- 1.Is the Commission aware of the ongoing hold-up in the legislative process in the Italian institutions?
- 2.Will it call on the Italian institutions to quickly take the necessary steps to safeguard citizens’ health and the financial stability of a strategic resource for the industrial future of Italy and the European Union?
