Restricting shops’ use of illuminated advertising displays and air conditioning
3.8.2022
Question for written answer E-002776/2022
to the Commission
Rule 138
Sarah Wiener (Verts/ALE)
Illuminated advertising displays are one of the main factors influencing energy consumption in urban areas at night. They cause significant light pollution and waste a lot of energy. Furthermore, many shops keep their doors open while the air conditioning or heating is on. There is reason here to introduce a key energy saving measure, which would be vital in times of energy shortages, which we may face as a result of the current situation.
- 1.In France, there is a ban on illuminated advertising displays between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. that applies to all towns great and small. Airports and railway stations are exempt. Would the Commission consider also introducing similar restrictions on advertising displays at EU level to save energy? If so, what policy instruments could come into play here? How will the Commission limit advertising displays across the EU?
- 2.It is energy inefficient to have the door open while the air conditioning is on. Could the Commission also take measures in this area (like in France)? If so, what measures would it take?
