EU accession negotiations for Albania

Question for written answer  E-002881/2022
to the Commission
Rule 138
Jordan Bardella (ID)

The opening of EU accession negotiations for Albania was announced with great fanfare by Ursula von der Leyen and the Czech Presidency on 19 July.

In Albania, the average monthly salary is less than EUR 500. The country, a gateway for illegal immigration into Europe, is often described as a veritable narco-state with failing administrative structures, plagued by corruption and mafia rule.

A note from the French Ministry of Justice in 2018 warned of the presence in France of Albanian-speaking mafia networks, for whom Albania’s accession to the EU would be a godsend for the development of their activities in Western Europe.

In the Commission’s view, in what ways is it of interest for the nations and peoples of Europe to see Albania join the Union one day?
