The opening of negotiations for the accession of North Macedonia to the European Union was announced with great fanfare by Ursula von der Leyen and the Czech Presidency on 19 July, paving the way for the potential accession of the entire Western Balkans.

According to a Kantar Public survey for the Commission (report 119/2, December 2021), 56% of French people are opposed to the further enlargement of the Union to include other states in the years to come. Only a minority (46%) of EU citizens are in favour.

When does the Commission intend to take into account the opinion of the European people before committing the Union to further enlargement?
