Threats by Turkey to Greece and Cyprus and, by extension, the EU as a whole
Question for written answer E-003106/2022
to the Commission
Lefteris Christoforou (PPE)
Turkey has recently been stepping up its acts of intimidation and provocation targeting Greece and Cyprus.
These are taking the form of daily encroachments into Greek and Cypriot airspace, not to mention the continued instrumentalisation of migration at the expense of Greece and Cyprus. The chief manifestation of Turkish expansionary policy is its continued occupation of European territory in the Republic of Cyprus, compounded by further encroachments and acts of provocation in Famagusta and its direct challenge to the sovereignty of Greece, as daily evidenced by its aggressive stance towards the Greek islands.
Turkey has not abandoned its revisionary tactics and expansionary plans in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Aegean Sea and the entire neighbouring region and nor will it do so for as long as there are those who refuse to respond to it with anything more than admonitions and resolutions.
In view of this:
- 1.Can the Commission say how it intends to respond to Turkish aggression and provocation targeting Member States and hence the European Union itself?
- 2.Does it intend to suspend funding for Turkey?
- 3.Is it planning to freeze the EU-Turkey Customs Union?
