Sale of oil in bulk

Question for written answer E-003208/2022
to the Commission
Rule 138
Silvia Sardone (ID)
The European Commission has proposed amending Implementing Regulation (EU) No 29/2012 laying down ‘specific standards for retail-stage marketing of the olive oils and olive-pomace oils’. Its proposal to authorise the sale of olive oil in bulk has raised eyebrows among Italian producers. Associations say the move would not reduce the environmental footprint of packaging, as the product would, in any case, still need to be dispensed into individual bottles in shops. Farmers argue that selling olive oil in bulk would heighten the risk of fraud, as it would be very difficult to monitor quality and there would be no guarantee that what it said on the label reflected the content of the bottle.
In view of this:
- 1.Does the Commission really intend to proceed with authorising the sale of oil in bulk?
- 2.How is it responding to protests by producers and farmers?
- 3.How does it plan to safeguard the quality of the product?
