Iranian military drones supplied to the Polisario Front

Question for written answer E-003422/2022
to the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
Rule 138
Antonio López-Istúriz White (PPE)
Yesterday, we learned that Russia had attacked the centre of Kyiv with a wave of Iranian ‘suicide’ drones, which caused the death of several civilians. A representative of the Polisario Front recently claimed that Iran, through Algerian mediation, would supply the Polisario Front with ‘kamikaze’ drones to be used against Morocco.
The use of this military hardware in Western Sahara represents a severe risk to the already fragile security and stability of the region and the Sahel. Iran’s infiltration in the region poses a clear risk to the 1991 UN ceasefire agreement and jeopardises the peace process, the work of the UN mission to Western Sahara and the diplomatic efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to bring the parties to new roundtable discussions. Further instability in the Sahara and the Sahel will negatively affect European security.
