to the Commission
Rule 138
Benoît Lutgen (PPE), Pascal Arimont (PPE)
Brazilian President Lula said that he wanted the free trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur to be signed quickly. He called on the Commission and the Member States to make progress in this regard. The Swedish Presidency of the Council also seems to be of the same mind and hopes to move forward with the work ahead of the summit between the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Brussels on 17 and 18 July 2023. In early May, the European External Action Service will unveil its proposals for a new agenda for EU-Latin America relations. On 23 January 2023, Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis told the European Parliament that the political context is ‘increasingly favourable to restart the conversation’.
- 1.Has there been any progress in the negotiations on an additional text on sustainable development to get clear commitments from the Mercosur partners in this field, in particular as regards the fight against deforestation?
- 2.Does the Commission intend to carry out an in-depth analysis of the impact of this agreement on European farmers, taking into account in particular the cumulation of the various agreements concluded by the EU?
- 3.How will the Commission support the farmers that are negatively affected by this agreement?
