EU readiness for Irish reunification
28.2.2023
Question for written answer E-000652/2023
to the Commission
Rule 138
Chris MacManus (The Left)
Experience has shown that the EU’s borders and membership are subject to rapid and sometimes unexpected changes. In order to better manage such events, the EU must forecast and plan for such changes.
- 1.In this context, can the Commission clarify what analysis it has undertaken with regard to adapting the Union to the possible reunification of Ireland, as provided for under the Good Friday Agreement, given that the north of Ireland would be automatically integrated into the EU?
- 2.Secondly, can it give an indication of what financial support options might be feasible to facilitate the entry of the north of Ireland into the Union in the event of Irish reunification, considering, in particular, the constructive role that the EU has played in peacebuilding in Ireland and the integration of Germany’s eastern states (Länder)?
