to the Commission
Rule 138

Recent investigations by the Spanish newspaper El País and Greek news outlet Solomon report what seems to be a modus operandi of the Greek security forces: allegedly, a vast number of migrants are apprehended when they enter Greece illegally, without being offered the possibility to apply for asylum, contrary to EU law. In addition, migrants are held in detention centres where they are subjected to violence and inhuman and degrading treatment.
According to these investigations, they are stripped of their belongings before being transported along the Evros River to Türkiye in inflatable boats. Based on the data collected, it is estimated that over the past six years, Greek security forces may have taken more than EUR 2 million in cash as well as phones and other valuable belongings.
- 1.In view of these reported mistreatments, will the Commission open a formal investigation to verify the alleged actions of the Greek security forces?
- 2.Does the Commission consider the abovementioned practices in line with EU law?
- 3.What action does the Commission intend to take in order to enforce EU law and prevent these alleged practices by the Greek security forces?
