The Commission is working on a Relief Package[1] to help Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) build resilience by making it easier to do business in the Single Market, improving access to finance, tackling the skills challenge, and combating late payments through a revision of the Late Payment Directive[2].

To face the increase in energy prices, the Commission has already proposed the REPowerEU plan[3] to improve security of supply and shield consumers from high energy prices; the extension until 31 December 2023 of temporary emergency measures to address high energy prices; and the recent introduction of temporary state aid rules to foster support measures in sectors which are key for the transition to a net-zero economy[4].

The Commission has also endorsed an amendment of the General Block Exemption Regulation that provides further simplification for Member States to facilitate and speed up the green and digital transition[5].

The Commission has recently presented a proposal for the reform of the electricity market design[6] that, once approved, will include the possibility for Member States to extend regulated retail prices to SMEs in case of a crisis.

Finally, next to the digital and sustainability support activities for SMEs of the Enterprise Europe Network[7], the Commission has also set up an Early Warning Europe Mentor Academy[8] to improve the availability and scope of services for companies in financial difficulties.

It will mobilise mentors across Europe, build the online learning programme for upskilling new mentors, and link them with other European and national networks that provide services to SMEs.
