Delimitation of the EEZ surrounding the Turkish puppet state

Question for written answer E-001530/2023
to the Commission
Rule 138
Demetris Papadakis (S&D)
A few days before the Turkish elections, Tayyip Erdoğan has been seeking to upgrade the occupying regime in Cyprus in a bid to present us with a new fait accompli in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Addressing his supporters at a rally, the Turkish President announced that he had signed an ‘Exclusive Economic Zone delimitation agreement’ with the pseudo-state. We call for an immediate investigation into this assertion, which, if confirmed, should be met with a firm and clear rebuke by all the European institutions.
The so-called ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ is an illegal regime that enjoys no international recognition, being made up of the Cypriot territories occupied following the Turkish invasion of 1974. Therefore, any such ‘agreement’ can only be illegal and dangerous to the legitimacy and stability of the Eastern Mediterranean, which is located around the southernmost point of the European Union.
In view of this:
- 1.Can the Commission say what action it plans to take in response to such moves by Türkiye to present us with a further fait accompli in the Eastern Mediterranean?
- 2.What measures will it take to protect the sovereign rights of Cyprus as a fully-fledged EU Member State?
- 3.How will it proceed with a view to preventing the above illegal actions?
