Pornography – a scourge for adolescents

Question for written answer E-001719/2023
to the Commission
Rule 138
Aurélia Beigneux (ID)
The spread of smartphones has led to an increase in under-18s viewing pornographic images. In France, over two million minors visit X-rated sites every month. Given that our children are increasingly prone to addictions, the situation is worrying.
Often produced in conditions that are contrary to human dignity and presenting a degrading image of women and human relations, today these films have become an educational tool and an initiation into sexuality for a large number of young people.
The psychological effects are very harmful and can lead to a range of behavioural issues. Anxiety, mood disorders, inhibition of dopamine receptors, loss of self-confidence and depression often affect consumers of this type of content.
- 1.Does the Commission intend to run an awareness campaign about the effects of pornography on behaviour?
- 2.What approach does the Commission advocate in terms of sex education?
- 3.Does the Commission intend to encourage Member States to better control minors’ access to websites that offer this type of content, and what actions is it taking to combat addiction in adolescents?
