to the Commission
Rule 138
Jean-Paul Garraud (ID)
On 7 December 2022, Frans van Daele was appointed Special Envoy for the promotion of freedom of religion or belief outside the EU. In a resolution of 18 January 2023 (2022/2049(INI)), the European Parliament welcomed his appointment and called on the Council and the Commission to evaluate the mandate with a view to providing him with sufficient human and financial resources.
In a reply given in February 2023[1], the Commission stated that the mandate would be attached to Vice-President Schinas and went on to specify its objectives: to encourage cooperation with various stakeholders in countries suffering from discrimination on the grounds of religion or belief; to support intercultural and interreligious dialogue; to promote religious diversity and tolerance within educational programmes and curricula; and, finally, to coordinate all activities within this mandate closely with the EU Special Representative on Human Rights.
- 1)Can the Commission provide details of the resources made available to the Special Envoy for the performance of his duties (office, human and financial resources)?
- 2)Can the Commission indicate how the Special Envoy reports on his activities?
