Migration pressures in Italy
6.9.2023
Question for written answer E-002569/2023
to the Commission
Rule 138
Nadine Morano (PPE)
Since the beginning of 2023, Italy has again been experiencing a massive influx of migrants, both by sea and land. Almost 90 000 irregular arrivals have been recorded, more than double the number last year.
This wave of migration has led to a 71% increase in asylum applications.
It has also caused many tragedies at sea, including several shipwrecks off the coast of Lampedusa, the latest on 9 August in which 41 people died.
In view of the above:
- 1.What tangible steps have the Commission and its agencies taken to support the Italian authorities faced with the huge scale of these arrivals?
- 2.Given that migrants who arrive by boat on the Italian coast have left from the African coast, what action is the Commission taking vis-à-vis the African Union to ensure that the countries of departure and transit of irregular immigration finally assume their responsibilities in the migration crisis?
