Based on the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Working Plan 2022-2024, the Commission is currently reviewing the existing legislation on ecodesign measures for solid fuel local space heaters (Regulation (EU) 2015/1185[1]).
The review will assess the options for amending the regulation, including setting stricter requirements on the emissions of pollutants from solid fuel stoves. Options under assessment will include the fitting of after-combustion equipment such as filters.
The review is expected to be finished by the second quarter of 2024, and consequent legislation for updated ecodesign requirements is possible after that.
As to the obligations under the Ambient Air Quality Directive (2008/50/EC)[2], Member States are required to take measures to ensure that exceedance period of the limit values for different pollutants are kept as short as possible. The choice of measures is left to the discretion of Member States.
The Commission has adopted a proposal to revise this directive on 26 October 2022, which is currently being considered by the co-legislators.
