Question for written answer E-002741/2023
to the Commission
Rule 138
Andżelika Anna Możdżanowska (ECR)
According to an expert report by the Polish Society of Public Health, cigarette smoking will cost the Polish economy PLN 92 billion in 2021, including PLN 50 billion in medical costs directly related to smoking. Smoking-related diseases have huge consequences in terms of reduced productivity and increased risk of mortality. Smokers are at risk of chronic infectious diseases.
The preventive measures proposed by the Polish Society of Public Health include education on the harmfulness of smoking from pre-school age and an information campaign. They propose price increases and a total ban on the advertising and display of tobacco products.
In connection with the above, would the Commission answer the following questions:
- 1.Does the Commission have data and expert reports in its possession on the harmfulness of tobacco products and the burden on the economy and health services at EU level?
- 2.Does the Commission intend to introduce legislation to restrict the use of tobacco products?
- 3.What preventive measures does the Commission propose to reduce smoking and its consequences and does the Commission intend to increase spending on anti-smoking measures?
