Parliamentary question - E-002746/2023(ASW)Parliamentary question
E-002746/2023(ASW)

Answer given by Ms Dalli on behalf of the European Commission

1. The lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, non-binary, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) Equality Strategy[1] identifies data collection as a key tool for assessing the situation of LGBTIQ people and for effectively tackling inequalities. The progress report[2] as referred to by the Honourable Member describes the actions undertaken in this regard until February 2023, including stepped up efforts under the High-Level Group on Non-discrimination, Equality and Diversity in its Subgroup on equality data, for instance through developing a Guidance note on the collection and use of data for LGBTIQ equality[3].

The Commission is preparing a mid-term review on the implementation of the strategy[4] which aims at assessing how the situation of LGBTIQ people has developed, the progress that has been made, and which areas require more focus to fully implement the strategy by 2025. Related data needs will be addressed by consulting Member States and relevant stakeholders[5].

2. As committed under the strategy, the Commission fosters exchanges of good practices between Member States, including in the LGBTIQ Equality Subgroup, with the aim of enhancing LGBTIQ equality on various topics[6].

Finally, as Guardian of the Treaties, the Commission pays close attention to potential breaches of EU law and has undertaken legal action against Member States in case of violations of fundamental rights of LGBTIQ people.
