Combating poverty
4.10.2023
Question for written answer E-002931/2023
to the Commission
Rule 138
Nadine Morano (PPE)
The 17th Barometric Study on Poverty and Economic Precariousness by Secours Populaire reveals that almost 30 % of Europeans consider themselves to be in a precarious situation, with numbers differing considerably between Member States (as high as 49 % in Greece, compared with 22 % in France). 39 % of Europeans have given up buying meat and 10 % have resorted to using food banks.
These alarming figures can be explained by the repercussions of high inflation on purchasing power over the past 2 years, and the rise in energy prices caused by the war in Ukraine and the green transition.
In view of the above:
- 1.What measures is the Commission implementing, both autonomously and in coordination with the Member States, to protect Europeans from inflation?
- 2.Does the Commission intend to propose new measures to bolster the purchasing power of European citizens?
