Question for written answer E-003492/2023
to the Commission
Rule 138
Sara Matthieu (Verts/ALE)
Many online casinos and gambling companies are based in Malta. The country’s gambling industry makes up 10 % of its economy.
In June, Malta amended a law allowing gambling companies to disregard foreign court rulings, known as Bill 55.
However, this legislation appears to be at odds with European Union rules and regulations. The European Commission is reportedly investigating this.
In Recommendation 2014/478/EU, the Commission stands up for young and vulnerable people, vowing to protect them from the gambling industry.
- 1.What is the current status of the Commission’s investigation?
- 2.Are any results known yet? If not, when can they be expected?
- 3.Can any measures already be taken with regard to Malta?
