Islam does not mean extremism

Question for written answer E-000024/2024
to the Commission
Rule 138
Loucas Fourlas (PPE)
The authorities of the Member States were on heightened alert ahead of Christmas and the New Year, because the security services were warning about possible terrorist attacks.
Islam is an inseparable part of multi-ethnic, multireligious Europe. However, there are heightened concerns due to the situation in the Gaza Strip and the politicisation and radicalisation of Islam in relation to European democracies.
In addition, radicalisation allows leaders such as Erdoğan to exert influence over countries such as Germany, France etc., where millions of Muslims are permanently resident. Millions of them are citizens of the countries in which they are permanently resident. In this way, he can threaten European leaders that he will turn the fanatics against them, for example in elections.
In view of this:
- 1.How is the Commission responding to the phenomenon of weaponisation of political Islam?
- 2.What action is it taking to identify the sources of funding for organisations that are attempting to politicise Islam?
