Crisis in the production of mangoes and avocados in the provinces of Malaga and Granada (Andalusia) owing to drought

Question for written answer E-000090/2024
to the Commission
Rule 138
Juan Ignacio Zoido Álvarez (PPE)
Since last summer, the provinces of Malaga and Granada – like all of Andalusia – have been suffering under one of the worst water crises since records began. Some municipalities are seeing stoppages in the water supply of up to 12 hours a day, affecting both domestic consumption and economic activity.
The drought in both provinces is aggravated by the scarcity of water resources. This situation has resulted in mango and avocado production falling by between 80 % and 65 %, causing significant economic and job losses. The district of Axarquía (Malaga) accounts for 15% of European avocado production while more than 15 000 jobs are dependent on these crops in the coastal region of Granada.
In view of the serious damage in terms of employment and in the production of these crops, the following questions arise:
- 1.What compensation measures, whether financed within or outside the CAP, does the Commission intend to take to remedy the economic and human capital losses suffered by agricultural businesses in Malaga and Granada?
- 2.Has the Spanish Government exhausted all the Commission’s available programmes to counter the consequences of drought in these provinces?
