Security on public transport in the EU: request for clarification from the Commission about ensuring uniform safety standards

Question for written answer E-000388/2024
to the Commission
Rule 138
Susanna Ceccardi (ID), Annalisa Tardino (ID), Marco Campomenosi (ID)
Regulation (EU) No 1370/2007 identifies efficiency and safety as key pillars for ensuring a high-quality public transport service that is accessible to all[1].
However, a number of problems undermine this objective, including overcrowding and a growing concern for the safety of passengers and staff.
Frequent incidents of violence and vandalism are threatening passengers’ well-being, while the lack of investment in security and video surveillance systems makes people feel even more unsafe. These issues need to be addressed through targeted investments in infrastructure and public transport.
In view of the above:
- 1.What support will the Commission offer Member States to curb the growing number of attacks on frontline staff and facilitate psychophysical therapy and legal assistance programmes for workers affected by such incidents?
- 2.What will it do to encourage investment in infrastructure and public transport so video surveillance systems can be installed and safety at work improved?
- 3.Does it think it would be appropriate to make it mandatory for any new public transport vehicles being purchased to have minimum safety equipment, such as a ‘closed cab’ isolating the driver from the rest of the vehicle, so as to ensure uniform safety standards across the Union?
