Regulation of use of certain insecticides (Movento)

Question for written answer E-000569/2024
to the Commission
Rule 138
Hilde Vautmans (Renew)
Belgian fruit growers use pesticides such as Spirotetramat[1] to protect their crops. Due to recent developments in the new directive on endocrine disruptors, the producer of Movento/Batavia (Bayer) has decided not to submit a renewal application for its product to the EU.
To meet the requirements of the new directive, additional research work was done to understand better the mechanism of the known effects of Spirotetramat. While some results led to clear assessments ruling out any mechanism of action of endocrine disruptors, other study results were inconclusive. Partly because of this uncertainty, the manufacturer decided to discontinue the product and it will no longer be available in the EU from 2025[2].
- 1.Can the Commission provide more information on possible alternatives being explored to meet pest control needs after the above-mentioned discontinuation owing to EU legislation?
- 2.Are there any plans to introduce new, innovative pest control products on the EU market, and if so, what are they?
- 3.What studies were carried out to assess the effects of Spirotetramat with regard to EU legislation on endocrine disruptors, and can the Commission provide further insight into the findings of these studies and how they contributed to the decision-making process?
