With reference to Written Question E-5767/08 on the non-interoperability of mobile phone chargers, would the Commission state what progress has been made towards harmonisation and, in particular, whether it has already taken measures to tackle this problem, which directly affects European consumers (who are obliged to replace chargers which still work) and the environment (because of the enormous quantity of waste thus generated)?

Has the Commission already held discussions with the manufacturers with a view to enabling any consumer to use any mobile phone charger, which is increasingly necessary? If so, what was the outcome of the discussions?

Does the Commission think that specific legislation will be required to achieve this purpose?

Does the Commission envisage extending any such measures to other types of electronic equipment?
