pursuant to Rule 115 of the Rules of Procedure

by Gabriele Albertini and Arnaud Danjean, on behalf of the Committee on Foreign Affairs

to the Council

  Subject: Non-Proliferation Treaty

 Answer in plenary

What is the Council doing to ensure that the EU has a focused common position going into the 2010 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference that will ensure a successful outcome?

Does it intend to review the 2005 common position in preparation for the 2010 NPT Review Conference? Could it outline current priorities for the review conference and provide an update on the outcome of the May 2009 preparatory committee meeting?

Which action has been taken to deepen the dialogue with the new US Administration and other nuclear weapons powers with a view to fostering a common agenda for the reduction of nuclear warheads? What are the priorities for the EU in implementing the 2009 ‘EU-US Declaration on Non-Proliferation and Disarmament’?

How is the EU implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1887 (2009) and are any specific new joint actions being considered for this purpose?

Could the Council tell Parliament how the EU is cooperating with third countries and international organisations with a view to helping them improve non-proliferation policies and export controls?

What role can or will the WMD clause in agreements with third countries play in this respect?
