The prolonged effects of the financial and economic crisis in Europe have led to a significant rise in youth unemployment, from 14.7% in 2008 to 22.1% in early 2011. Around 5.5 million young people are unemployed in the EU, which means that over one in five people under 25 cannot find a job. At the same time, many young people are failing to fulfil their educational potential or obtain the skills employers need. 7.5 million people aged 15 to 24 are currently neither in a job nor in education or training.
