In the light of its evaluation report on the data retention directive (Directive 2006/24/EC), the Commission said on 18 April 2011 that it would propose a revision of the current data retention framework. In its action plan implementing the Stockholm Programme, the Commission announced a revision proposal for 2012.

1.  Will the Commission stick to its commitment to propose a revision of Data Retention Directive (Directive 2006/24/EC) within 2012?

2.  What will the Commission do to make sure that the directive is fully implemented in all Member States? Given that the argument to postpone implementation of Directive 2006/24/EC until after the announced revision is not a valid one, what is the Commission further envisaging to do in order to ensure that Germany finally implements the directive?

3.  Will the Commission base its revised proposal on a thorough and factual evaluation of the impact on privacy?

4.  What does the Commission intend to do in order to improve the directive, given the technical shortcomings raised by Parliament?
