The Commission communication on the European Union Strategy for the Protection and Welfare of Animals 2012-2015 (COM(2012)0006) has been much welcomed by the European Parliament, as it has set a clear roadmap for actions in the EU animal welfare policy field during the last five years. Parliament was particularly pleased that the strategy introduced many aspects of Parliament’s resolution of 5 May 2010[1].

Parliament appreciates the progress made so far and encourages the Commission to make sure that the action points still outstanding are delivered on time.

Will the Commission draw up a new strategy for the protection and welfare of animals for the 2016-2020 period so as to ensure the continuity and clarity of operations which are essential to achieving further positive developments in EU animal welfare policy?

Will the Commission, as a crucial part of a new animal welfare strategy, prepare a proposal for a simplified EU legislative framework for animal welfare, as called for by Parliament in its resolution of 4 July 2012 on the European Union Strategy for the Protection and Welfare of Animals 2012-2015[2]?
