By its resolution A/RES/47/237, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 15 May the United Nations International Day of the Family (IDF). The IDF reflects the importance which the international community attaches to the family. The 2018 annual observance of the IDF, on the theme ‘The Family and inclusive societies’, will explore the role of the family in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 16 in terms of ‘promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development’. The IDF has an official symbol that can be used on a flag.

1. What position is the Commission taking in international organisations related to family issues and what activities is the Commission preparing for the observance this year?

2. Which are the Commission’s NGO partners in designing, deciding, promoting and implementing the Commission’s policies on family issues?

3. The official UN symbol of the IDF is a solid green circle with an image in red. The image consists of elements of simple drawings of a heart and a house. This indicates that families are the centre of society and provide a stable and supporting home for people of all ages. Will the Commission fly the official UN IDF banner at all Commission premises on 15 May?
