Subject: 14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP14)
 Answer in plenary

With biodiversity currently facing record decline, and with the majority of the 2020 targets set to be missed once again, the 14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP14), to be held in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt between 17 and 29 November 2018, will be particularly essential. The Parties will review the current Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and seek to establish a long-term vision and prepare the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

In this context, we would welcome answers from the Commission to the following questions:

1. What action is the Commission planning to take to scale up efforts to achieve the targets of the 2011-2020 Strategic Plan?

2. Does the Commission intend to propose a stronger implementation mechanism for the post-2020 framework in order to halt further biodiversity loss?

3. Will the Commission propose strengthened accountability tools, in particular for the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans, in order to improve governance and facilitate the development, revision and implementation of the post-2020 targets and the achievement of the 2050 Vision?
