to the Commission
Rule 136
Tomas Tobé
on behalf of the Committee on Development
From 8 to 10 June 2021, the UN General Assembly will convene a high-level meeting on HIV/AIDS to review progress on the implementation of the 2016 Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS and adopt concrete commitments to accelerate action to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
UNAIDS data shows that the HIV epidemic remains a global crisis. In 2019, 38 million people were living with HIV, of whom 12 million did not access life-saving antiretroviral treatment, while 1.7 million people contracted HIV and 700 000 people died of AIDS-related causes. The inequalities that drive the HIV epidemic have been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
A renewed EU commitment to the global HIV/AIDS response is needed, with more ambition, accountability and resources.
- 1.How will the Commission ensure that the EU contributes to the adoption of forward-looking and ambitious commitments in the 2021 political declaration on HIV/AIDS?
- 2.What steps will the Commission take to accelerate efforts to end AIDS and support partner countries’ efforts to build resilient health and community systems, while mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic?
- 3.What will the Commission do to address inequalities fuelling the HIV epidemic at country level?
