Question for oral answer O-000010/2022
to the Commission
Rule 136
Anna Cavazzini
on behalf of the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection
Informing consumers and empowering them to make their own contributions to the global efforts for a cleaner planet is essential for more sustainable consumption and for reducing the growing amount of waste and the negative impacts on the global environment. The New Consumer Agenda and the Circular Economy Action Plan aim at promoting repair and encouraging more sustainable products. Following Parliament’s request for a consumer right to repair to be established, the Commission has launched a public consultation on sustainable consumption of goods – promotion and reuse. It aims to propose a directive amending Directive (EU) 2019/771 on certain aspects concerning contracts for the sale of goods (Sale of Goods Directive) and is considering proposing a separate legislative act on the right to repair.
- 1.How will the Commission ensure a right to repair for consumers and how will it ensure that consumers are sufficiently informed about the reparability of products at the time of purchase?
- 2.How will the Commission encourage producers to design goods that last longer and are easily reparable?
- 3.To what extent will the Commission proposal on the right to repair help to reduce unsustainable consumption and reinforce the repair sector?
