Food product assessment by the Yuka app
30.3.2026
Priority question for written answer P-001322/2026
to the Commission
Rule 144
Silvia Sardone (PfE)
Yuka, the French app with 80 million subscribers, is spreading to consumers around the world. The app assesses the wholesomeness of food products and relies on analytical systems such as Nutriscore.
In Italy, it is giving rise to a great deal of controversy as it assigns particularly low scores to excellent food products such as Parma ham, balsamic vinegar, Parmigiano Reggiano, bresaola and mortadella.
According to many trade associations, applications such as this have an impact on the market and consumers, relying on misleading information and failing to take into account the quantity and quality of the products 'judged,' so that there is a serious risk of fuelling unfair competition.
In the light of the above, can the Commission answer the following questions:
- 1.Has the Commission conducted any in-depth analyses of applications providing nutritional advice and has it analysed their scientific basis?
- 2.Have the effects on competition of these applications been assessed?
- 3.Has the Commission taken action to protect traditional and high-quality food products penalised by these applications?
